Affiliate Marketing Tutorial - Step 3: Researching Topic
Demand
When you’re starting a business, any business, you want to
do a significant amount of research to make sure you’re
making the right decisions. With affiliate marketing the
research you have involves demand. Are there enough people
searching for your information to make a website worth your
time and effort?
Have you made a list of possible affiliate marketing
subjects? Have you narrowed those subjects into unique
niches? In the last tutorial we used the example, Rock
Climbing as a potential topic and then we narrowed it to
rock climbing with children, handicap rock climbing, and
rock climbing in Australia.
With your list of niche topics, take a few minutes to think
about what keywords people would use to search for that
information.
For example, Rock Climbing in Australia might be searched
for with the keywords “Rock climbing Australia or simply
climbing Australia. Now comes the research part…
Using your keywords, it may help if you make a quick
spreadsheet for this. Place your niche topic in the
left-hand column, your keyword in the column next to it, and
then leave a space for results and more keywords. It may
look something like this:
Niche topic -- Keyword -- Supply (Google) Demand -- Other
potential keywords
Using Google, conduct a search with your keywords. How many
website results come up? Place that number in your supply
column.
Now, using the
free overture keyword tool,
enter
your keywords to determine how many people are searching for
those keywords. That’s your demand. Overture will also
generate a list of relevant keywords and the demand for
those keywords.
Repeat this exercise with all of your niche topics. It will
give you a great data base of information to base your final
decision on. Optimally you want a niche topic that has a
lot of demand and not much supply.
At this point if you have three possibilities, then you’re
doing great. If you need to start over and brainstorm some
more niche topics, that’s fine. Your ultimate goal is a
profitable business and this is where the work begins.
It is important to make sure that there will be an audience
for your affiliate marketing website. No audience means no
visitors, and no visitors means no sales and we want you to
have an extremely profitable affiliate marketing business as
much as you do.
What’s next? Now comes the fun part, the next tutorial
tells you how to find affiliate products that you believe in
and what to look for in an affiliate marketing program.
