The 1997 birth of
her promotions business was a result of fellow direct sellers seeing her
achieve recruiting and sales success with her website.
They soon were
inquiring if Shannan could help promote their websites and her client base
began to grow. In 1998, Success Promotions (as Shannan's business is known
today) was officially launched at

Shannan averages between 20 and 50 clients at one time and when retail sales
are good, her business is busier. |
When asked how she manages all these clients, she says, "I manage everyone by
giving 110% to everything I do for my clients. But there are times when two or
three clients with the same first name get confusing. My clients and I are
generally quite close, so we are on a first name basis. But I've occasionally
answered one Linda's question to another Linda, only to greatly confuse everyone
involved!"
Because Shannan is always busy promoting other people's businesses, we asked her
how she manages her own business promotions. "Success Promotions started out on
a frayed shoe string marketing budget," says Shannan, laughing, "I did, and to a
great extent still do, utilize inexpensive and creative methods of marketing on
and off the Internet. I participate in flyer swaps. I swap banner ads with other
companies providing services to folks doing business on the Internet. I write
and publish marketing oriented articles. And all three things help. But the
amazing thing is really how fast the business has grown for how little
advertising I actually do. The most powerful form of marketing for Success
Promotions has been word-of-mouth marketing from from satisfied customers." No
amount of throwing money at marketing can ever compare to the power of positive
referrals from satisfied customers. And Shannan has certainly learned how
effective this can be.
For someone who has spent their money and energy building a website that no one
seems to be visiting, Shannan offers a bit of advice. She emphasizes the need to
focus on acquiring better search engine rankings and more incoming links to the
site. Only advertise as your budget allows. Shannan understands the scarcity of
funds for a small business and that's why she decided to create website
promotions packages to fit any budget. If you're thrifty, you can always find
good advertising deals online.
As the year is drawing to a close and we are all looking forward to greater
successes in 2003, Shannan offers the following advice on setting goals: "I
remember being profoundly affected by an old Will Rogers quote that even if your
on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. Goal setting is
critical to accomplishing anything. But a healthy does of motivation and
commitment never hurt, either. To get the most out of any plans you are making
for 2003 you have to plan your work and then work your plan."
