Are You Prepared for System Crashes, etc?

Postby tishialee on Thu Aug 02, 2007 3:40 am

Ever since I read Sharon Odom-Fling's post about how she came home from vacation only to find that her computer had been hacked into and all the issues she had to face because of it (http://experts.internetbasedmoms.com/sharon/dont-let-this-happen-to-you), I can't stop thinking about how unprepared I am for a major thing in my business.

I've talked about backups and doing them but I'm ashamed to say that I haven't done one yet. And after reading Sharon's story it put everything back into perspective for me - that it can happen to me! For some reason I've always thought I didn't have anything to worry about (pretty stupid to think that way!) but now I know I've got to make the time to do this. In fact I've decided it's not an option - it's a requirement for me!

Are you prepared if something were to happen to your computer?

I am ashamed to say also that I've never backed up a website and I don't know how.

Though someone over at Mom Masterminds did ask how to do so and Lynette kindly gave some directions so I guess I better get moving on actually following them!

For my computer I do backups but not nearly often enough. A while back I bought an external hard drive to save create a backup for all the important stuff.

Ok am I complete airhead or what? I don't understand how to go about doing a backup. Do I have to purchase discs or something to put the backups on? How would I backup my client's individual information - would I save onto a seperate disc for each client or what?

HMMMMM I feel completely LOST!

I know if you're using Wordpress, you can get a plugin that will automatically backup your blog. I don't know about other softwares. I guess that's one other good thing about Wordpress, huh? ;)

Tishia - I just started using Mozy.com - you can get 2MB for free which was enough for me to backup all the important stuff I do for my clients, pictures, etc... What it does is automatically backs up stuff for you that you tell it to - so Cool!

I still use the external hard drive that I save files to but the problem is remembering to do it, this Mozy program remembers for me.

Now I do still need to figure out how to backup my wordpress site and the others sites I've got.
