Other online businesses under one main biz name?

Postby mtorrini on Sun Sep 02, 2007 9:49 am

Is it common that a person have a main business name (with FedID#, stateID# and DBA) and then have several different online biz companies that "fall under" it?

Conversely, if you have several online biz names, must all of those names *each* be registered with fed, state and listed with a DBA name?

Thanks!

Thanks for asking those questions, those are good ones to get answers to!

I "THINK" the EIN is associated with the person, not necessarily the business, but it's quite possible that I'm wrong.

Yes, this is common. This is okay to do as long as the businesses are all related. If you have completely different/unrelated products or services, you might consider setting up separate businesses for tax and liability purposes, but if they are all related, one Fed ID# is okay.

I would think you would want to register each biz name to avoid others using that name.

Yes, you can do this.

For example, you might setup your legal business name and entity as ABC Company LLC.

Then you might have three websites: babyslings.com, clothdiapers.com and soycandles.com.

On each of those websites, you'd state that thissite.com is a division of ABC Company LLC.

You'd also state in any shopping carts on your sites and TOS that credit card charges will appear on statements under your main business name.

This is what I do with my businesses.

I personally set up a different LLC for each business. It helps
keeps things very organized and since each business is a different
angle of network marketing - it makes sense to do so.

As someone said above, its a liability issue having them all lumped
under one. This is what I've learned anyhow, as one of my businesses
is information on financial education.
