If you're talking about another kind of directory, let us know.

I wouldn't worry about which is best because best on Monday might not be on Tuesday. Best results depends. Direct traffic from the directory might be very small, yet the incoming link might boost your SEO and raise your site in the search engines.

Some directories use "no follow" links while others allow deep-linking. You can wear yourself out trying to determine which directories are best for you, or you can simply try to get listed in as many as you can.

Today's PR0 might be tomorrow's PR5.

Best of the Web - DMOZ - Yahoo - Joant

Three of them will charge you, but they are the best in my opinion.

Links from DMOZ is worth GOLD, but they don't accept new submissions anymore. I might be wrong, but I think Google actually bought them out.

The next best thing is the Yahoo Directory, but you have to pay. I think it's like $200 a year now and they have some strict guidelines. If you have a good site and you have the money then this will really pay off. Depending on your niche, it will get you some good traffic.

A good way to check if a directory is worth posting links to is to check the Alexa Ranking and not just the PR. As a rule of thumb you should just get your link to a couple of hundred directories. It takes ages to get picked up by search engines, but long term it helps a lot - especially with ranking in Yahoo
