5 a.m. Start
November 6, 2007
I’m back to waking up early to get ahead with my work (especially my writing work). I find it’s really the only time of the day where I can work for a few hours without any interruptions or distractions, and I can get SO much done.
It’s just not the same at any other time of the day. At night i’m exhausted and my brain doesn’t seem to work properly and during the day once I drop off the kids at school there are just too many distractions - like magazines, books, going out for a coffee… you get the picture
Actually those two hours in the a.m. aren’t nearly enough to get my work done but I can do three times as much as say between 1 and 3 p.m. And even though it’s hard, i’ll continue doing this because once the holidays roll around the days are going to be madness. I’m even considering 4:30 a.m.
What about you, when do you work best?

I also work best in the mornings. I tend to transcribe throughout the day and then if a project doesn’t need to be in until the next day I will wait to proof it in the morning. I seem to catch a lot more with “fresh” eyes.
I too work best in the morning…once I get over the morning sickness “just got up” feeling. I need to start going to bed earlier and getting up when hubby leaves for work at 5, then I’ll get more done I think.
Right before I got pregnant I was staying up until 1 or 2 AM every night and was pretty productive then, but since I’ve been pregnant it’s like my brain shuts off about 8PM and I can’t concentrate like I used to.
During the day it’s just a plain madhouse around here, so working is not easy and just stresses me out trying to work and chase a 2 yo.
I have to wonder if I’m the only night-owl around?
I love to work late into the night. It takes me over an hour to fully wake up in the morning (even when I do go to bed early) and I would prefer to do almost everything at night. Drives my husband nuts when I feel like puttering around and tidying at 9pm!
I would love a life in which I could wake up at 10 or 11 and go to bed at 2 or 3 in the morning. Not happening anytime soon, but a girl can dream!
Patrysha, I used to be a night owl but that just hasn’t worked out since the kids. What I find now is that i’m just too tired to do work that takes a lot of thinking at night, whereas early in the a.m. I’m very focused… in a strange way i’m more awake and focused when I have to work then if I just need to wake up and lounge around with the kids on a weekend morning.
When I’m alone. Whenever that is. And I don’t mean when the kids are sleeping. I mean when everyone is out of the house and it’s just me. As you can imagine, that doesn’t happen often.
I’m a night owl too Patrysha - but there’s no guarantee that any set time is going to be good as far as being in the mood to write and deal with projects.
Thankfully I don’t have to work around small kidlets or school and sports schedules like many of you do.
Ah yes, “alone” is definitely the best time for me… but we don’t get a lot of that in this house.
I have found myself staying up late to get things done, not necessarily because it’s when I work better but because my kids are in bed and the house is quieter.
I’m actually a morning person, but not THAT early! I get up around 6:45 when my hubby leaves for work. Unfortunately, the kids are usually up about 30 minutes later.
