Brownie flavored taffy anyone?
October 3, 2007
Since a young age, my kids have always helped me cook; first by sitting on the counter supervising and then actually participating. Now they are teens and they help prepare the meal or sometimes will cook it completely.
Although I’m sure we’ve gone over the steps, at least a thousand times maybe I wasn’t clear on how important it is to follow the directions.
While I was working a few days ago, my son decides to make fudge. Now, we already cheat when we’re just making it for us by using marshmallow crème and follow the recipe on the back. So I tell him to make sure to follow the instructions but here’s where I go wrong… I ASSUME he’ll ask if he has any questions.
About 15 minutes later, I go see how it’s coming along and he has this perplexed look on his face. He says it seems to be pretty runny, which it does. So I start questioning him on what all he added and the amounts. I find out that he substituted 2% milk for the evaporated milk that it calls for. For all who have made fudge before, you know this type of boo-boo is fatal.
We decided to let it cool to see how bad the damage was; after all it doesn’t have to be perfect. The end product looked like what I figure Laffy Taffy candy must look like before it is cut into strips. It had the same consistency and texture except it tasted just like an uncooked brownie. It was disgusting!
Trying to cheer him up, I suggested he submit his recipe to the Laffy Taffy people to see if they wanted to try a new flavor. He flatly refused and didn’t find the humor in it. LOL
All I can say is thank goodness he wants to be an electrician and not a chef!

Uh, Mel? Gives a whole new meaning to the term “di-structions” doesn’t it?
*waiting for real fudge with nuts*

Fudge, now you have me thinking about Christmas time. That’s about the only time that we make fudge, but our is usually peanut butter fudge.
My sister-in-law is notorious for not following directions. I don’t know how many times we’ve eaten things that didn’t turn out exactly as planned.
