Watch Out For Flying Boomerangs

from Sarah Robinson

I got a nasty email today.  I like to think I am thick-skinned enough to handle these when they come, but this one really got to me.  Why?  Because it questioned my integrity. That is like a stab to the heart for me.

And to make matters worse, I know I handled the matter in an aboveboard manner.  This person just conveniently overlooked the particular email that communicated the information she was certain I had promised and hadn’t sent.

Ugh.  I really don’t like it when people “assume” they are right and someone else is wrong before checking their facts.  My husband calls it “contempt prior to investigation”. The whole energy flow around that is b-a-d.

And here’s the thing.  In her communication with me, this leader revealed 1) what kind of leader she is and 2) how she “shows up” in the world as a person.

More important, she showed me what kind of boomerang she just sent out into the world.  I’d sure hate to be there when it comes flying back.

I get emails like this more often than I wish I did and I just don’t understand them.  The exceptional leaders I know hold a positive lens on the world – looking for the very best.  And guess what?  They usually find it.

See, here’s the thing.  The energy and attitude you put out in the world will come back to you.  It just works that way.  So, if I assume that others wrong and I am right, for example, without checking my facts – well, we all know the old saying about “assume”, right?

If, on the other hand, I am looking for what is good, right and best in others and in life – now that’s a boomerang I want to catch on it’s return flight.

What kind of boomerangs are you throwing out to the world?
