Are
you ready to start a career in direct sales and want to make
the next move? Taking the time to choose the right
opportunity can help assure financial success and personal
satisfaction. Make the right choice with a little research
and some decisions by spending a little time exploring
opportunities.
First, choose
a product you love. Most of us love chocolate, but may be
more interested in eating it than espousing its value. The
more enthusiastic you are about a product the more likely
you will be able to convince others to buy it and the less
likely you’ll be to tire of it.
You may want
to consider choosing a product you already know something
about. Someone who never wears makeup might have quite a
learning curve if choosing to sell cosmetics. Selling
requires a certain amount of knowledge about the product in
order to convince others they want or need it.
When
researching companies, start with companies you know and
like. If you have a positive perception about a business or
product, chances are others do as well. Also, consider
companies you may not be familiar with, but present
themselves and their products in a way that fits your style.
Another
consideration when exploring companies is their record of
accomplishment. Have they been around for a long time? Are
they a new company growing very quickly? An older company
may offer more security, while a new company may provide an
opportunity for faster promotion. Brand new companies with
niche products may have less competition between sales
representatives.
Most companies
offer direct sales representatives the opportunity to start
their business with very low start up costs. Companies
offer a discount for their “startup kits” and offer various
levels of support for little or no cost. Consider how much
you are able to invest and how much support you expect.
When
considering your investment, do not forget to weigh it
against the companies’ commissions. Some companies offer as
little as 7% commission, but may offer higher priced items
or a higher potential sales volume. Most companies pay
between 25% and 50% commission.
Consider a
company’s flexibility and how that relates to your needs.
Do they require a certain number of sales within a minimum
timeframe? Can you adjust your schedule to meet their
requirements? Companies offer a wide array of options,
person-to-person sales, home party sales, online sales and
combination of sales. How do their programs fit with your
needs and personality?
Take time to
ask all the questions above and come up with some of your
own. Look for a company that best fits your needs and you
think you will be successful and happy with. You may not
find an opportunity that has everything you want, but if you
explore all your options, you could come very close!
