WAHM > Direct Sales Articles  > How to choose a direct sales sponsor

How do I choose a direct sales sponsor?

For most direct sales companies you will either choose or be assigned to a sponsor  - another independent representative of the company who will benefit financially from your sales.

You will want to choose a compatible sponsor. You should interview at least two or three potential sponsors to find one that you believe can help you become successful.

  1. Choose someone with similar goals. If your goal is to replace a full-time income and/or build a large team, a sponsor who joined the company to get a discount on the products is probably not the best mentor for you. You want a sponsor with similar goals who can share what has or hasn't worked for her.
  2. What level of experience and success does a good sponsor need? One of the benefits of joining a direct sales company is that the company usually offers guidance and materials for training new recruits. So even a new consultant has resources to help someone else get started. Assess how much help you'll need from a mentor in determining what level of experience you want your sponsor to have.
  3. Does the sponsor offer ongoing training and support?
  4. Do you need a sponsor who lives close by? If you primarily market and recruit offline, it might be beneficial to have a sponsor who can help you out with a party or from who you can pick up product or sales aids if you run out. But with email and inexpensive long distance, and particularly if you plan on running your business primarily online, a long distance sponsor can be very effective
  5. Is the consultant offering any incentive for you to join her team such as a team website or extra promotional materials?
  6. Talk to your sponsor's sponsor too. If your sponsor leaves the company you will most likely be assigned to her immediate upline.

Starting out with someone who is compatible and shares your goals will go a long way to helping your become successful.
