Start a Teaching Sign Language to Babies Business

What you will be doing.  Plenty of parents know the frustration of a crying baby.  They have to try dozens of things before they figure out the reason why baby is crying.  Until babies learn how to talk and express their feelings parents have to make educated guesses.   Baby sign language has become more popular as a way of communicating with babies.

Parents learn to perform basic signs that babies can understand and then they teach them to the babies.  When they are old enough, the babies will learn to respond to their parents using this new form of sign language. ;;

How to start.  As a practitioner of baby sign language, you will teach parents, grandparents, and others the art of communicating with their babies.  Learning to become proficient in sign language is the basis of the business.  Participating in an accredited program validates your credentials with your clients.  A course of study that offers hands-on work as well as book work is well-rounded.

Starting costs.  The price of the baby sign language course will vary by location and instructor.  For the business aspect, a computer with Internet access (to access your business website), a telephone, and a copier can start you off right.  If any booklets are needed for reference for teaching, that cost can be recouped in the fee for the teaching classes.  Starting costs can be kept between $500 and $1,000.   

Skills needed.  Patience is a virtue in a baby sign language business.  If you’ve never tried signing before, there is a learning curve.  Clients will appreciate the time taken to make sure they are performing the signs correctly.  Teaching skills are important to convey the information to the parents.  Your knowledge will put them at ease about the validity of the program.

Marketing.  Flyers work well for this type of business.  Post them in day care centers, Mommy and Me classes, Lamaze classes, supermarkets, and churches.

Places that parents frequent with their young ones make perfect advertising spots. 

Ads in the Yellow Pages, baby and parenting magazines, and newspapers are other ways to advertise.  Offer discounts for group sessions.  Groups that are willing to host in their homes can enjoy discounts as well, since this saves you having to rent a venue or open your home. 

Baby sign language is a beneficial tool for communicating with babies before they can speak.  With your help, babies will be able to tell their parents what they need or want using their hands.
