Start a Baby Supply Business

Babies are a booming business, but also a competitive one. Set yourself apart from the competition by serving a special need for brand new parents or by offering the best product support and information possible.

Baby Supplies business

What you will be doing. Wherever there are babies, there will be baby supplies in demand.

You will offer these products to families with babies at a discount price that makes it worth their while to buy from you. These items are not single use. Once they run out, customers will need more. As long as you can stay competitive with the current market, your products may win out over the rest.

How to start. Decide what products you will offer. The most common are: baby powder, lotions, baby bath soaps, gels, brushes, washcloths, towels, and manicuring supplies. Whatever you choose to carry, search the Web for wholesalers that can give you a good price on bulk orders.

Lay out a plan for displaying your items. Gift baskets and baby item bundles would sell faster than single items alone. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles could buy bundles for baby showers. You could arrange bath bundles, grandma’s house bundles, and the like. Use clear makeup bags to hold travel size lotions and other bath items.

Visiting dollar and other discount stores could present a bounty of baby supplies at lower prices than at department stores. Unique supply packages are one way to stand out from the department stores. As long as you keep it fresh, customers will come back.

Start up costs. Start up costs depends on where you buy your supplies. Advertising can be done with a few hundred dollars.

Purchase enough items to make one of each basket that you want to sell. Use a digital camera to upload pictures to your website so potential customers can see what you are offering.

If you don’t own a digital camera, spring for one. You will get a lot of use out of it.

Shipping items and shelves to store your baby supplies are needed at the beginning if you plan to have an Internet store. Using a garage will give you more space to work. This business can be run out of your home so there is no need to rent office space.

Skills needed. You should love everything “baby”. Knowing what mothers need and don’t need will help you avoid investing in products or gimmicks that will cost you money. Interacting with your public lets the customer know that you care. Marketing skills are useful. Baby supplies are a common product, so an enterprising mind is needed to put a spin on the product and get people to do business with you.

Marketing. Pass out flyers with business cards to friends and family members at baby showers. Give your baby supply bundles as gifts at showers. When others ask, tell them that you make them yourself.

Offer to do shows for baby showers in private homes and in the workplace. Bring a sampling of all of your baskets. If a certain dollar amount in sales is reached by the guests, then the mother-to-be gets a free gift.

Advertising in baby magazines can be expensive, but worth it. If you can manage it, offer a monthly basket. People can give a year of bath or other supply packages to a new baby. The items will be delivered each month on a specified day. When mothers get their friends to sign up, they receive a free monthly basket for every three to five friends that buy from you.

Baby supplies are in demand all the time. Moms are always looking for places to buy them at better prices.
