Test market your message. Poll your friends and family members to see if they have encountered the same life issues that you have. Ask them to try what has worked for you.

Starting costs. The cost for this type of business includes a home office setup, advertising, and anything needed for presentations. A computer, telephone, fax machine, and printer complete the office setup. If you decide to invest in a website, you will need high speed Internet access.

This business can be managed from home but the nature of the business means that you will be traveling to give speeches. The cost of gas and car maintenance can be figured into the fees that you charge for appearing at different venues.

Skills needed. Motivational speakers are not afraid to be real with the public. A willingness to be honest and genuine about your own life makes the lesson you are trying to teach that much more appealing.

Motivational speakers like people. After all, without the audience, your product won’t sell.

Marketing. Know the audience that you want to target. If your advice pertains to spiritual or religious principles, people who are spiritually-minded will be your primary target audience. Place ads in magazines that will reach your target audience. Start by speaking at churches and any other civic group that you are associated with.

The Internet can be a useful tool for getting the message out. Sites like YouTube specialize in videos. Tape one of your presentations or do an informal presentation without an audience. Upload the video to YouTube and tell friends and family to take a look. See how many hits you get and who is watching.
