How to Start A Song writing Business

What you will be doing. Those big name music stars we’ve all heard about have given us some of the most memorable songs.

They must stay very busy writing, composing, and singing the songs.

Unless you look at the inserts that come with the CD’s or an album jacket, you don’t know that the songs are often written by someone other than the artist that sings them.

Songwriters come up with the lyrics and/or the music for the catchy tunes we love to hear. They are experts at stringing words together in ways that will become popular in the mass market. They give the people with the pretty voices, something to sing about.

How to start. Songwriters are also musicians. You will need to be able to play the piano, guitar, or some other major musical instrument that will help with the melody when composing the song. A songwriter that can compose lyrics and music is an even greater asset.

Songwriters don’t have to write just for big time stars. Movies need songs, children’s videos, children’s musical CD’s, and television shows. If you can sing, these areas are a good place to get a start if you want to lend your voice to some of your songs. Choose a niche and begin composing songs.

Starting costs. To attract the attention of music, television media, and movie companies you will need demonstration CD’s.

You can create your own or outsource. If you create your own, you will need a state-of-the-art computer with high speed Internet access.

Music synthesizers and other acoustic equipment to create demos can be costly. Look along the lines of $10,000.

Other office equipment that is helpful includes: color printer, copier, separate telephone line, and fax machine.

Skills needed. First of all, you must be musically inclined. You don’t have to be able to sing, but having an ear for what is popular in music today will make your songs more appealing. To sell your songs you will need to sell yourself. A fair amount of confidence and creativity is crucial to getting your foot in the door and getting the right people to listen.

Marketing. Advertise in music trade magazines and the local newspaper. A website to showcase your lyrics and music give people a chance to listen. Join a professional songwriters association to take advantage of their advice and also as a way of advertising what you do. Mail demo CD’s to music companies and song publishers. Presentation is everything. The music business is very competitive and you want your work to stand out.

Songs remind us of special moments in life. As a songwriter, your lyrics can become the next big hit.
