If there is a way to cut costs and maximize the work done, they will be counting on you to find it.Clients will detail what they are looking for and ask for reports that detail your recommendations for them. 

How to start.  Read up on the companies in your area.  Knowing the ins and outs of their business will give you an advantage in an interview.  Becoming familiar with their product will help you devise a plan to tackle their efficiency problem.  Company financial reports on their websites will give you numbers to crunch to see where they are spending the most money. 

Starting costs.  The starting costs can get pretty high for this type of business venture.  A home office is a central location to work from with clients.  Outfitting this office requires computer software, a computer, a printer, fax machine, telephone, Internet access, supplies, and presentation equipment.  Costs could run from $5,000 and up.  This includes advertising materials and costs. 

Skills needed.  An efficiency expert working with corporations and even local businesses benefits from a background in business. 

Knowing the aspects of a business and what it takes to run one helps when trying to pinpoint areas of inefficiency.  

Efficiency experts investigate everything.  Part of the investigation is to know what to look for in the first place.   

Clearly communicating your findings to the officers of the company is important.  No amount of information or change will guarantee increased profits.  Be sure to point out that you are making suggestions that can increase the bottom line if followed.  Your report is a starting point not a cure all. 

Marketing.  Advertising in the Yellow Pages and classified ads is encouraged.  Sending out a brochure mailing to all local companies, large and small, in the area puts your name and profile out there.  Ads and brochures should be full color and professional. 

A website will showcase your talents and work history.  Selling special reports on particular aspects of company efficiency can supplement the income of your business.  With a large enough client base, more affluent companies may pay to bring to you their location to work for them.
