Become an Etiquette Consultant from Home

What you will be doing.  Manners are very important.  Not everyone uses them, but they should.  Following the proper protocol in various situations can be the difference between looking like a fool and being seen as sophisticated.  

Manners and social graces can be taught.  In this modern world of political correctness, you can’t afford not to know the finer points of dealing with other people.

An etiquette consultant uses their knowledge to help business executives and individuals make a good first impression. 

How to start.  There is not much to do besides have an extensive knowledge of what is right and proper in various social circles.  Do some demographic research.  Large to medium sized metropolitan areas is a better market for etiquette seminars and lessons.   

Put together a course that highlights what everyone needs to know about etiquette.  Developing a course for individuals and a course for corporate businesspeople is a profit-making option.  The corporate course should include advice on international client etiquette, observing foreign customs, and gift giving. 

Starting costs.  This business has a low overhead.  You will need an office from which to create course material and conference with clients.  Include a computer, printer, and a telephone.  Investing in reference materials such as etiquette books is helpful for a refresher.  If you already have the office equipment, your costs will mainly be due to advertising.   

Skills needed.  People in the business of etiquette and manners need to know something about the subject themselves.  Etiquette issues span many disciplines including wedding seating charts, greeting foreign guests, funeral observances, place settings, how to address important individuals, and the list goes on and on. 

Etiquette consultants are people persons.  Your business depends on providing crucial information that people don’t know in a non-threatening and upbeat manner.   

Marketing.  Advertise in newspapers and the Yellow Pages.  You will mainly be selling your expertise in the form of corporate seminars and classes. 

Include the cost of reproducing the course materials in your overall fee. 

Offer several individual courses and give clients a break on the price if they order the entire course package. 

Use the word-of-mouth method to get the word out around town.  Offer your services to churches, youth groups, schools, and civic organizations that could benefit from this kind of course.  Publishing articles on different aspects of etiquette for websites, local magazines and newspapers can catch the eye of bigger fish like small businesses and larger corporations in your area. 

Manners are everything.  Showing good ones is a sign of respect in the civilized world today.  In the business world, it can be the difference between landing a big account and having them take their business elsewhere.
