Learn How to Start a Work from Home Computer Animation Business
What you will be doing. The world of animation has
moved past the one dimensional character on the screen in
black and white. It has even moved past the colorful moving
image of earlier animated films. Animation can be used in
films, medical models, architecture, and other forms of
business.
As an animator, you will help clients to realize their
business goals. If you are into gaming, you can be on the
cutting edge of computer graphics for new video games, maybe
even developing a new gaming system. In the area of films,
you can create memorable characters for short films or
feature length. If you are not interested in being the next
Steven Spielberg, you can be a product designer. Your
designs for new games, graphic models, and other blueprints
can be sold for company shares and a piece of future
earnings of the designs.
How to start. Take classes in animation. The more you
know the better you will do in the market. A major in
computer science with a concentration in graphic design can
put you on the right track to head into computer animation.
Find a mentor in the business who can tell you all the ins
and outs.
If you are working on gaming, your computer needs to be able
to support all of the application software that you will be
using. Creating your own games or short films will be a
portfolio of sorts to show to companies that could use your
expertise. Anything that you create even for demos should be
copyrighted to protect your designs and ideas from theft.
Start up costs. A state of the art computer graphics
station can cost upwards of $5,000 to $12,000. All of this
equipment may not be needed right away. Knowing which way
you want to go with your animation business will help you
decide what to purchase. A business loan may be the prudent
way to go to have all the equipment you need for any job you
undertake.
Skills needed. First of all, you will need computer
skills. Animation requires lines of code to perform the
desired functions. It also requires the use of sophisticated
software and machinery. As a business person, you will be
communicating with potential customers. Your speech should
be clear, concise, and easy to follow. If a client can’t
understand you, they can’t hire you.
The more you know about the business, the more options you
have for expansion. You can turn your skills to the area of
consulting with clients that have problems with their
animation. You would work with their graphics people to
solve software glitches and get programs up and running for
production.
Marketing. Computer magazine websites have ad
sections where you can market your business. A website of
your own would help you to show some of the unique images
out there. You can also show some simple images that you
designed. Interactive models would peak the interest of
people visiting the site.
Send out professional email mailings to area graphics
companies. Be sure to state what you can add to the company
profile. Offering your services to local film makers is
another way to advertise to a larger market when your name
is in print on a completed work.
Animation has changed significantly over the years. There
are many areas of the business to specialize in that can
bring you notoriety and profit. Be open to new ideas and
flexible with potential clients.
