Start a Computer Sales Business
What you will be doing. Computers are an ever growing
market. People are always on the lookout for the best deals.
They want reliable products and good customer service. If
there is a problem, they want someone to be able to offer
solutions.
As a computer sales business owner, you will be selling
computers to the public. This can be done on the Internet,
through catalogue sales, or direct sales. This business can
be conducted from a home office or a store front.
How to start. If you want to be able to compete with
the online auctioneers, take out a business loan. This loan
gives you the option of purchasing the computers, notebooks,
and accessories you want to sell. You can also auction your
services as technical computer support for your products. A
detailed business plan should be used when deciding how much
loan money to apply for.
You will need a place to store the computers. A garage is
suitable if it is clean, dry, and temperature controlled.
Renting a storage facility to hold your merchandise is an
option. Be sure to take out insurance on the computers in
case of theft, fire, or other disaster.
Study the market. Learn all that you can about the
brand of computer you are interested in selling. Know how to
clean them, fix them, start them up, and shut them down. The
more you know, the better your customer will feel.
Accessories are no different. If you offer them, know what
they do and what computer they can be used with.
Start up costs. Costs for computers can be pretty
significant. A business loan should encompass advertising
and product cost. Be smart. Purchase a few desktops and a
few notebooks to begin. You don’t want to get stuck with
items that don’t move. If you’ve done the research this
should not be a problem. If you know that you will niche
into one particular brand, then you can buy as many
computers as you can afford.
Skills needed. Computer and mechanical skills are
needed. If you offer technical support with the computers
that you sell, you need to have an intimate knowledge of the
brand and what can go wrong. Since you will be talking with
your customers a lot, brushing up on customer service skills
is a good idea. They may ask questions they should know the
answer to, but you are there to help. Your attitude will
make the difference between a satisfied customer and one who
returns your product.
Marketing. Advertise your business in local
newspapers, home business magazines, and computer magazines.
Anywhere people will look for information about computers,
you should try to place an ad. A website is a way to
advertise your computers and list the services that you will
provide with the sale of the computer.
Write articles for computer publications that post a link to
your website. Use your expertise to bring in more money for
the business and attract customers to your website. Your
business can lead to sales of e-books or special reports
about computer repair, computer care, and how to
troubleshoot. If someone already has a computer, they can
still find something to purchase on your website.
Computers are evolving on a daily basis. The key to a
successful computer related business is knowledge—knowledge
of the product and the market. If you want a foot in the
door of this billion dollar industry, start doing your
homework today.
