How to Start A Database Consultant Business

What you will be doing.  Companies amass huge amounts of information.  This is done through day to day business activity.  The information includes employee data, client data, financial information, projections, and the like.  As a database consultant, you will create and manage databases that organize this information for easy access within the company by those who need it. 

How to start.  Start with family and friends.  Friends that have home-based businesses could use your help organizing their client’s lists and financial information.  Churches have rosters of members with different talents and backgrounds.  The information here can be used to produce a church directory or develop small groups for meetings or committees. 

As a consultant, business insurance and licenses may be required.  Checking on this information is essential.  Business insurance protects you in legal matters.  A name also has to be chosen for the business so that you can register it.  Doing an Internet name search reveals if the name you have chosen for your website is already taken. 

Starting costs.  Database consultants will work with clients in their offices part of the time.  But, a top notch computer system is still needed for testing and development of databases to be used.  For the computer, software, and other office equipment, the costs can go from $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the accessories you will have to buy.  With the hourly rates you will be able to charge once you are established; the money spent will be regained. 

Skills needed.  Computer skills are essential to this business.  Being able to move quickly and efficiently through information and organize it is an asset to you.  Computer programming adds a profitable component to the business. 

Attention to detail keeps clients happy.  Listen and take notes when meeting with clients.  Knowledge of current database software and technologies keeps you abreast of developments.  Don’t add extras that the client didn’t ask for even if they are helpful.  There may be a reason they didn’t add them. 

Marketing.  Your business will be large companies and the small businessperson.  Spend the money on advertising to capture both types of clients.  Brochures and print ads are great for local clients.  Internet advertising can bring in bigger companies.  Your website should be user friendly to companies and have a technical side for computer personnel.  

As you create new databases, be sure to patent your designs.  The business can make money with this unique software.  Protecting your designs protects your business profits. 

Business information systems are profitable.  All companies want a way to protect and manage their information efficiently.  The more skills you can offer, the more money you will make.
