Start a DVD / Video Business
What you will be doing.
Just about every home has a VCR or DVD player or both.
People pay for video memberships or DVD clubs, but the
prices are high for the clubs and there are membership
requirements. If you just want to purchase videos or DVD’s
at a good price without any strings, the search continues.
As a dealer in videos and DVD’s, you will be providing new
and previously viewed media to the public. There are so
many genre choices that you have a large field in which to
work. Obscure titles that may have gone out of circulation
can bring in good money if you can secure copies that are in
pristine condition. The more popular the movie, the more
money you stand to make.
How to start.
An adequate number of videos and DVD’s in popular titles
will comprise your inventory. Previously viewed and new
titles should be kept separate. Each previously viewed
video or DVD will need to be viewed by you to ensure that it
runs fine and inspected for cracks or other defects before
selling it.
A license to sell should be acquired locally if it is
required to set up your home business. Purchasing movies
from wholesale dealers can mean deals for you and the
customer. DVD mailers and other shipping items will be used
to send out merchandise to customers.
If you plan to have an online component, you will need to
setup a website complete with a store. The website gives
customers an online place to view your entire collection.
Allowing them to make comments in forum yields information
about what customers want to see and what they are not
interested in.
Starting costs.
Your home office will need storage closets for the
inventory, a computer, printer, fax machine, a VCR, and a
DVD player exclusive to the business. Expect costs from
$2,000-$3,500. If you decide to buy into a franchise
business instead of starting your own from scratch, expect
to pay around $20,000 or more.
Skills needed.
Liking movies is a good place to start. With any business,
if you don’t like what you are doing, the business will
become a chore. Lack of reasonable motivation will not keep
you working to expand the business. Customer service skills
keep small issues from escalating into bigger ones that
could ruin your business reputation.
Marketing.
Ads in the local paper can be useful to get people
interested in giving your business a look. Tell friends and
family to pass the word that you will be renting a booth at
the local flea market. Many people visit flea markets
looking for deals so you may meet people that don’t live in
your area. They could spread the word in their own
communities.
Online marketing will yield results as well. Advertising on
forums and business sites through their affiliate programs
increases website traffic. Writing movie reviews for
content sites on the Internet with links to your website
store get great exposure. Put together movie packages that
combine two or three movies in a sequel or a new movie and
an older one featuring the same actor. This will help move
some older movies that you may have trouble selling.
Movie watching is a great way to spend a quiet evening or a
rainy day. DVD’s and videos are cheaper than attending a
movie at a theater and you can watch it as many times as you
want with no additional cost. If you play up this point and
offer exciting movies, your business will make money.
