Become an Event Promoter
What you will be doing.
When someone has a concert or other show that they want
people to know about they look for someone to help them do
that. This person would be responsible for getting the word
out in an exciting way so that people would want to come to
the event.
An event promoter sells an upcoming event to the public.
They attract sponsors to buy into the event and bring in
customers.
How to start.
Many events go on every day. Start there. Try your local
church or civic organization. Plan ways to promote the
event with the budget set aside. If the event is free, most
radio stations will give you air time. Otherwise, there is
probably a fee equal to how big a spot you will need.
Choose which events you want to specialize in. An event
niche that you know something about would be the easiest.
If the events that you promote are interesting to you, you
won’t get bored.
Starting costs.
The costs for this business can be minimal. You will need
to set up a website for promotion of your business and the
events you are working with. A computer with Internet
access, printer, fax machine, and telephone are also
needed. Count on around $5,000. This includes advertising
items for your business and extra capital if needed for
licenses, insurance, or other incidentals when getting
started.
Skills needed.
Promoters are outgoing people. They can sell anyone on an
idea. There is also the art of the business deal. Becoming
familiar with the usual and customary vendor costs,
entertainment costs, and venue costs will keep you and your
client from getting ripped off. Business and marketing
skills will serve you well as an event promoter.
Marketing.
You will be in charge of items like full color flyers,
smaller flyers passed out in parking lots and malls, and
television spots. The idea is to get money and well-known
people for the event. In the case of non-profits, booth
fees can be waived in lieu of contributions to the event
cause.
For your business as a promoter, full color brochures mailed
out to event centers, churches, civic organizations, and
other community groups tell them why they should choose you
instead of the other person. Ads in trade magazines,
business magazines, and entertainment magazines will bring
increased visibility as well.
Don’t forget business cards. Keep a supply in your pocket.
You never know who you may meet who could help you along in
business.
Event promotion is big business. Your profits are directly
related to ticket sales and the success of the event.
Network with as many different people as you can.
