Become an Ezine Publisher  

What you will be doing.  With advances in technology and the Internet, magazines don’t have to be made of paper anymore.  Online magazines give people the convenience of downloading magazines instead of visiting the newsstand.  Those who publish electronic magazines can start their business more cheaply than starting out in print. 

As an e-zine publisher, you will offer advertising spots and interesting content for readers of your chosen genre.  The advertising can be used to pay for the subscriptions if you offer your magazine for free.  Or, advertising fees and subscription fees can be used to pay writers to provide column material in the magazine.  

How to start.  The e-zine publisher will also be the copy editor, content editor, layout designer, marketing representative, and head honcho.  It is a good idea to peruse the Internet to make sure that your niche idea has not been overdone. 

Look at other publications of its kind and decide what you can add that will make yours unique.  The magazine will need to be planned several issues ahead to make sure that you meet your deadline every month with original features for your subscribers. 

Starting costs.  The starting costs, though less than for a traditional magazine, can run high for the equipment and software needed to do the job.  Your computer needs to be outfitted with the latest in desktop publishing and picture software.  Your costs can be anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.  This includes the cost of sending out feelers to prospective companies to ask for their advertising dollars.   

Skills needed.  A publisher needs to be able to multi-task.  A publisher is skilled in the ways of desktop publishing and website design.  The publisher should also know what readers want to see in the way of content.  As the sole writer, your articles need to excite the reader.  They also need to be fresh and not a recycled version of the work the month before.  

Marketing.  You will need to keep track of the list of subscribers and their email addresses for mass mailings of the magazine every month.  Contests and other giveaways also can be mass mailed to subscribers and anyone who registers as having visited your site.  This is a way of drawing in more people to the website. 

Advertise your new magazine in the pages of magazines with different niche markets.  Send out emails to family, friends, and anyone else you know to advertise the launch of your new magazine.  You can hand out flyers and sample printed copies at church, work, and anywhere else.   

Starting your own magazine is a big enterprise.  This is no different for the e-zine publisher.  It may take a little time to see a viable profit, but if you have an interesting product it will catch on.
