Applaud all those people who have green thumbs. They can get a plant or vegetable to grow in any climate and in any soil. They have been blessed with a love of the earth and working its soil. For the gardener in your family, here are some ideas to enhance that growing spirit.

A gardener worth his or her salt wants to use the best tools available. Hoes, rakes, weeding tools, and pruning shears are basic to their arsenal. Choose a popular name in gardening like Fiskar for the tools in your basket.

Gloves are also germane to the task of gardening. Pulling up weeds or pruning without gloves means rough sore hands later. Heavy duty gloves that resist tears and prevent blisters are great for a gardener. If they are planting bulbs or something they can wear a pair of those thinner colorful gloves. Either way you can never have too many pairs of gloves if you work with your hands.

What will they plant? Most gardeners have plans for the seasons ahead of time but you can add a few things. Seed packets don’t cost much and come in flowers and vegetables. If they prefer, throw in a few packets of bulbs. Don’t forget the tools for bulb planting and some soil.

How will you package all of these things? A regular basket won’t do for a gardener. Present their goodies in a gardener’s tool belt or a large planting pot or a miniature wheelbarrow. Follow this line of thinking and you can come up with a dozen or more ideas for the basket.

Don’t forget that your gardener will need nourishment while they are toiling outside all day. The basket can include some filling but healthy snacks: water bottles, roasted nuts, energy bars, and some chocolate (milk chocolate is good for you!). Top it off with a large brimmed hat so they don’t get burned by the sun’s glorious rays.
