Ellie Tolbers of
On
the Lake Creations sells handmade cards and says, "Selling
cards online can be a challenge because one cannot touch and
feel your products. I find that to be the biggest hurdle as many
people have told me that my cards look much better in person
than on a flat computer screen. But most of my business is
conducted via the online world so I had to come up with some
ideas to get my cards in the hands of people.
- Offer a free card sample: Ellie offers one free card
per household. When she first started to do this, she worried
about giving away too much to freebie hunters, but she said it
as been a great marketing tool and 80% have returned to order.
- Send thank you cards to everyone: Ellie sends her own
thank you cards to everyone she deals with, personally and
professionally. Se sends her cards in clear envelopes, so people
can see the design right trough the envelope.
Says, Ellie, "Last November I worked with an Event Planning
company to paint Christmas stockings for a wedding. A few weeks
after the order was shipped to them, I mailed the company a
thank you card in the same style as the stockings. The bride of
this wedding saw the card and then ordered thank you cards for
her wedding. That simple act of sending a thank you card
resulted in another order."
