Start a Hair Care Business
What you will be doing.
Hair care is important to men and women. The price of cuts
and styles in salons these days have skyrocketed. Most
salons offer other amenities to enhance their business which
adds to your cost. Also, stylists rent their booths and
they have to pay for that.
It seems impossible to get quality hair care service for an
affordable fee. As a hair care specialist with your own
business, you can provide that service and pass the savings
on to your customers. With an at home studio, you won’t
have to lease space, thereby reducing your overhead
significantly.
How to start.
Any hair care professional needs to attend a professional
school of hair care. When you successfully complete the
program, you can apply for your cosmetology license which
allows you to perform hair care maintenance. As a home
based business, you will need to check with the courthouse
to see if a permit is needed to operate your salon.
A business license gives you the perk of purchasing your
salon products from a wholesaler. Setting your prices will
depend on the going rate in your city or town. If your
prices are slightly higher, you will need to have the
amenities to back it up. As a home based salon, your prices
can even be a bit lower than the average. Since you have
low overhead, you can still make a profit once your client
base increases.
Starting costs.
For such an enterprise, a small business loan is a good way
to go. You will be able to purchase all of your equipment,
hair care supplies, chairs, a business sign, advertising
materials, cash register or credit card machine. If your
garage is not equipped for a sink, you will have to have
work done to make it ready.
Computer software is needed for bookkeeping purposes and
Internet access. A website of your own can offer tips on
hair care, instructions for achieving different styles, and
other beauty tidbits.
Skills needed.
Most importantly, you will need to be able to perform hair
care maintenance. Knowledge of the latest styles and
hairdos for the older client are essential to building the
clientele you want. People skills keep the customer happy.
If your salon will perform cuts for men, you will have to
have skill in that area as well. This is good for moms with
young children. They can have their hair groomed and the
kids all in one place.
Marketing. Hair salons are plentiful. What will
make your salon stand out are your skill, prices, marketing
savvy, and customer service. Give out surveys at the first
visit to start a file for each customer. Offer a few
dollars off of the next visit to customers who bring a new
customer with them.
Pass out flyers at church and other places where you go
regularly. Give friends and family a discount on their
first hair service with you. Word of mouth is the best
advertising that you can get. Since you are a small salon,
take appointments only at first. Your business can expand
into hair care classes or other professional ventures like
cosmetics or your own line of hair care products. Working
with a manufacturer, you can have them drop ship your items
to customers which will limit your inventory to only what
you want to carry in the shop.
Hair care is big business. The more stylish your hair
designs the more business you will do. But, always make a
place for the simpler styles for your faithful customers.
They are your business base.
