Creating a Herbal Gift Basket

Some people love to cook. Watch the Food Network Channel if you don’t believe me. For them, creating in the kitchen is a form of art. Help them out in their creative process with a gift basket filled with herbs.

Herbs are some of the best ingredients to add to soups, meats, stews, and side dishes to add flavor. Dried herbs last longer than fresh and can be rubbed in the hand before sprinkling to release the flavor. Fresh herbs perk up a dish as never before.

In an herb gift basket, go for a mix of fresh and dried herbs. You can include small pots, potting soil, and seed packets for the recipient to grow their own herbs. As you pinch off a leaf, the plant continues to produce. They will have fresh herbs whenever they need them.

Dried herbs can be found in any supermarket. Find bottles of herbs that are not the ordinary types used in every day cooking. You can buy seeds for thyme, oregano, marjoram, and cilantro. More exotic herbs can be supplied in dried form to be used sparingly in ethnic dishes or for experimental ones. Cooks just love to try out new tastes on their friends.

Not only are herbs used for cooking, but as healing remedies around the home. Many herbs can be used to create pastes and poultices to combat the common cold, childhood ailments, aches, and pains. Having some fresh herbs around the house will keep you healthy as well.

What about some reading material? Books on herbal remedies and cooking techniques can be placed in their home library for reference whenever they need it. If the person receiving the gift basket likes to dry their own fresh herbs, include a volume on how to do that. You can also go one step further and purchase the items needed to dry those herbs.

Herbs were used as medicines long before we had pills, capsules, and caplets. Those same herbs did double duty as cooking seasonings. The person getting such a gift basket will be getting two gifts wrapped up into one.
