Selling a Service

Start a Kid Carpool Service from Home
What you will be doing.
Parents have busy schedule and so do their kids. Each day
it’s a juggle between sports events and work, school and
rehearsals. If only it could be easier.
Now,
it can be with a kid carpool service. You will be ferrying little
tikes back and forth to school and after school activities. On
weekends, parents will thank you for not having to get up early for
soccer practice.
How to start.
Poll your friends and family. Is there a need for such a
service in your area? Some parents manage just fine and some
struggle with the schedule. Any concerned parent will want to know
that you have a clean driving history and no criminal record. The
vehicle you drive for business will need to have enough seat belts
for the number of kids being transported. Also, the vehicle needs to
be in good working order and have current inspection and tag
stickers.
Insurance coverage on you and all of your customers means peace of
mind in case of an accident. Check with the insurance company about
business coverage on your vehicle. You will be responsible for
dropping off children and letting the parents pick them up. Usually
the hard part is getting them there in the first place.
Starting costs.
If
you have a vehicle, that is a major part of the battle. You will pay
extra for insurance, a separate phone line, documents to verify your
non-criminal and safe driving status, and any vehicle repairs.
Payment for services is collected up front or on a weekly basis.
With the cost of fuel, you may want to get it up front.
Skills needed. Parents would feel more
comfortable if you are a parent. Then you know how to handle kids
screaming in the car and trying to distract the driver. Nothing can
interfere with the safe driving of the children.
Knowing the lay of the area means less time spent getting lost.
Mapping out the routes for the day also shows how much time you have
between stops. Get in the habit of writing down mileage when working
to gain deductions at tax time.
Marketing.
This is a local business that will be geared by word of
mouth advertising. To widen the circle of clients you start
with a client base composed of folks who know and trust you.
Once
the business begins to take off, they can recommend others to use
you. Create business cards and always keep a list of contacts that
prospective clients can talk to about your skills as a carpool
operator. Place a logo on the side of your vehicle with a contact
number.
