Start a Kid Party Food Catering Business from Home
What you will be doing.
Kids love to eat. If it tastes good, they will dive right
in. As a caterer for kid’s parties, you will provide that
scrumptious fare so that parents have one less thing to
worry about. The field is wide open since kids have parties
from a young age all the way into their teens..
How to start.
Kid’s
parties are fun. The biggest headache next to thinking of fun games
is the food. Some kids are picky. As a party caterer for kids, it
will be up to you to be familiar with popular party foods for
various ages. With new trends come new likes for different age
groups.
Specializing in little kid parties or teen parties fine tunes you
business. Your list of recipes and party foods is not so broad and
this also provides an opportunity to be creative with some dishes.
In your business plan, specify how you will run the business. For
example, use a different menu for themed parties. With set menus,
parents can choose a preset menu or pick from a list of items that
have no specific category.
Starting costs.
Your
biggest cost will be food. Caterers are responsible for setup and
cleanup. For the themed party idea, table clothes, plates, napkins,
and any accessories for the food table will need to match the theme.
This can run into big dollars depending on how much inventory you
want to handle. Tables can be rented from a party supply company so
you don’t have to store those in your garage.
Keep the menu to a minimum to cut starting costs. The kitchen will
need to be outfitted and inspected since you are selling foods made
there. Fines result in businesses that operate without the proper
permits. Caterers can spend about $2,000 or less getting started.
The best thing about food is that it doesn’t need to be purchased
until you are ready to cook it. Dry and canned items can be
purchased ahead of time so they are always in stock.
Skills needed. Cooking skills are helpful.
To keep people coming back, the food has to be great-tasting.
Prepare a few signature dishes that are special orders. These will
set your business apart from the rest.
Good customer service is important. At the party, you are catering
to the guests. Provide them what they need in a timely and
professional manner so parents will be happy. The kids will love you
as long as you keep the goodies coming.
Marketing.
Daycare centers, schools, gyms, and other places that kids
frequent make great places to advertise. Slip a few flyers into
mailboxes in the neighborhood. Advertise at church in the bulletin
and in the Yellow Pages. Local ad magazines that are circulated
throughout the city offer a cheaper route than the Yellow Pages with
results that are just as good.
Write articles on cooking for the local newspaper and trade
magazines. Ask to cater youth group activities at church to get the
word out about the business. Oh, and don’t forget the business
cards. They come in handy in many places.
