Start a Home-Based Nutrition Service  

What you will be doing.  Most people know that healthy eating is best for them but they don’t know how to go about it.  With food labels, breaking news about weight loss supplements, organic food, and the like, it’s hard to decipher what is good and what is bad.  As a nutritionist, you will consult with clients to help them cut through the fancy talk and find the food information that they seek.   

A nutritionist works with individuals and groups to enlighten them about what food does for their bodies and how to combine foods.  Through seminars, reports, personal diets, and individualized reports, clients will gain knowledge about nutrition to benefit their health.  You will gain the satisfaction that you have placed another person on the track to wellness. 

How to start.  Check with your state medical board to see what requirements are needed to begin a business as a nutritionist.  Some areas require that a nutritionist also be a registered dietician. 

This position requires either a degree in nutrition or a requisite number of classes to sit for a certification exam.  If a degree or certification is not required, you will still need to continually update your knowledge of food, nutrition, and the latest developments in nutrition science. 

Starting costs.  The costs can be minimal if a degree is not required.  Classes aside, you can start your business for around $1,500.  This cost includes a computer, printer, telephone, copier, and advertising.  Setting up a business requires an office or place that you can work from and keep your records.  Reference materials that you can consult when developing individual eating plans are also included in your home business setup. 

Skills needed.  A nutritionist needs to be familiar with the science of food.  Explaining this to clients requires someone who is articulate, easily understood, and people oriented.  A nutritionist functions as part psychologist and part food expert.  People rely on what you tell them to be factual and up to date information.   

Marketing.  Your business can be advertised in the Yellow pages, health and food magazines, and word of mouth.  To get started, so a few consultations for family members free of charge.  For an online venture, set up a website that will be dedicated to nutrition.  Since you won’t meet people in person with an online business, a questionnaire would help with creating individual client reports. 

Entering into affiliate programs with food, family, and cooking sites gives you much needed advertising.  Cooking sites are popular which could send a lot of Internet traffic your way.   As an added component, offer your consulting skills to hospitals, senior centers, and schools. 

Nutrition is important to everyone.  Your skills will be in great demand with the right marketing.
