Over the Hill Gift Basket

Let’s face facts: none of us are getting any younger. Each birthday hopefully brings a year of wisdom and one less mistake to make next year. Besides that, it brings a flurry of gifts from friends aimed to make us feel good about adding another notch to the aging stick.

When we reach the ripe old age of forty, everyone wants to push us over that hump and send us racing down the other side of the hill. It’s all in fun, though. If you know someone who is approaching their fortieth, use this opportunity to fill a gift basket full of gag gifts or special things to let them know you care.

The biggest gift when you are over the hill is the black balloons. Everyone expects them, so don’t disappoint. Tie a few around the handle of your gift basket. Regular balloons are pretty, but Mylar balloons resist popping and when all the helium is gone, they can be used as decorations or what not.

Be sure to choose an appropriately colored basket. Colored baskets are not necessary but for this occasion it goes without saying that the basket will be black or silver. Stick strips of silver streamers throughout the basket weaving to represent the gray hairs that are soon to come.

How do you fill a basket for someone who is over the hill and going down fast? Hey, if they are going downhill, they might as well enjoy themselves. Include some of their favorite sweet treats. How about a gift certificate to someplace special? Maybe something they’ve always wanted to try like bungee jumping or a flying lesson.

For the true gag gift giver, there are so many items to choose from. Some stores specialize in gag gifts, but they can be found just about anywhere. Include a folding cane, support hose (for women and men), large eye glasses, and some fake teeth. Everyone at the party will get a kick out of these.

What will you choose for the person who is over the hill? Make it fun. If you know the person well, they will be expecting something funny to lighten the mood and brighten their birthday.
