Turn that talent for creating and sewing into a business.  The next time you come up with an idea, create a pattern for it.  With a pattern, most anyone can make a dress, a doll, or a wall hanging.

Skills needed.  A pattern maker needs to know something about sewing and fashion.  Sewing can get complicated with all the terminology and techniques that go with it.  There is more than one stitch these days.   

Business savvy helps when convincing local businesses to carry your patterns.  Communication and writing skills are a plus.  You will be writing instructions for the use of the patterns.  Explaining the sewing terminology will make the patterns friendly for those who don’t sew much. 

Marketing.  Take out ads in children’s magazines, sewing periodicals, newspapers, and the Yellow Pages.  Ads in pet magazines are also an idea.  Pet fashions are popular now and a pattern maker could create a new niche market that yields astounding profits.   

Online, a website devoted to your pattern making skills is prudent.  You can also offer pattern kits that contain everything needed to complete the pattern.  Tutorials in basic sewing technique conducted through video can be posted on advertising sites like YouTube and web content sites for increased viewing by potential customers. 

If you have a pattern as a guide, you can make anything.  Patterns are blueprints for hours of creating fun for the novice seamstress or crafter.  Creating your own original patterns is a business gold mine.
