Start a Personalized Book Business

What you will be doing.
  As a personalized book dealer, you will write, illustrate, print, and bind the books yourself.  If you are a creative writer, the actual writing portion will be a bit easier.  The illustrations can be created from a software program.   

Personalized books can be used as a class project for a daycare center or an elementary school.  The children or their parents can fill out a questionnaire about the child to aid in developing the book along with a picture of the child.  This type of project can be conducted anywhere in the country from the comfort of your own home. 

How to start.  If you have a love of creative writing and making people smile, this is the business for you.  You will need to invest in equipment and software to design, print, and bind the books that you create.  Sample books should be printed up so that potential customers can get an idea of what the finished product will look like. 

A business license and any permits to sell your books at other venues need to be investigated.  Flea markets charge a fee for having a booth and most if not all, require permits to operate your booth.  Registering your business name will ensure that no one else can use it. 

Starting costs.  This type of business can cost several thousand dollars to secure all of the equipment.  You may have a computer, but you will need a good quality printer and a binding machine.  The binding can be done by a separate company, but this will drive up your overhead and thus the price per book. 

A small business loan may be an answer to the dilemma of start up costs.  Include the costs of printing several sample books.  In the samples, be sure to place the word “name” in parentheses wherever a customer name will appear.

This enterprise can be run as a home business.  Your home office should have room for all of the equipment you will need to produce the books and the shipping materials.  By purchasing a scale and a postage machine, you will be able to ship directly from your home to any destination without having to haul everything to the post office. 

Skills needed.  If you don’t desire to create a one-of-a-kind script for each book, you can work with a few templates that you develop.  Good communication skills ensure that you and the customer understand what is expected of each other.  The books should be carefully proofread for any spelling errors.  The cost of reprinting a book will be bore by you if the mistake is yours. 

Marketing.  Advertising can be done through ads in local newspapers, church newsletters, online sites, and your website.  Flyers can be sent to area schools for distribution among the teachers.  Personalized books make an excellent class project. 

To increase your sales, offer a kit to local schools.  For a price, the teachers can order your book kit which includes sample books, questionnaires for each individual that wants to participate, an order form, and any other information that you want to include.  You can even offer fundraising options.  As a fundraiser, the book prices would be higher so that the money can be distributed between you and the fundraising organization. 

Personalized books can be big business if you explore every avenue open to you.  These books could also be sent to family members as a birth announcement.  Use your imagination and come up with some great ideas to further your business.
