What you will be doing.  The Internet is the place to be if you want to get noticed.  Millions of people search for information of all kinds on a daily basis.  When your business is conducted via the Internet, the number of people that know where to find you is crucial. 

How to start.  As a search engine optimization specialist, you will help website owners draw traffic to their sites.  Having a website to represent your presence in cyberspace doesn’t mean that others can find you.  Through the use of keywords and a user friendly domain name for your website, you can ensure that your clients’ websites make their way into the top ten results for Internet searches pertaining to their particular niche. 

Take some time to search the Internet yourself.  Look at website names to see which direction you need to go with when choosing the domain name.  Once you have a name, get it registered and get going setting it up.  How well people can find you on the Internet will test the skills that you will market to your clients. 

Starting costs.  If you own a computer already, your costs will be around $1,000 or less.  Advertising and setting up a home based office will be the bulk of your cost.  To get started, you will need:  printer, telephone for business, fax machine, and software.  A spreadsheet program allows you to input all of the client information and list keyword suggestions for their website content and website domain name.  

Skills needed.  HTML is the language of most website pages.  The more familiar you are the better.  A listening ear and good people skills are important to getting all of the information from your clients to help them optimized their website rankings.  Patience is also needed.  It will take time for the results of your work to manifest itself. 

Marketing.  Advertise on your own website and other small business websites.  Ads in computer magazines, business trade magazines, and flyers are a good start.  Send flyers to local businesses.  Do a mass mailing. 

Do searches for local businesses and see where their website falls in the rankings.  Visit the websites and see what can be improved about the site to increase their visibility.  As a hook, offer one suggestion to the company when you get a chance to meet with them.  If they agree with it, they may want to hire you to hear more. 

Search engine optimization is the key to making your business stand out on the Internet.  With so many businesses competing for various niches in the market, everything that can be done to improve the bottom line is a plus.
