Start a Reminder Service Business  

What you will be doing.  Nowadays there are so many things to keep up with.  It’s no wonder people forget birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions of importance.  Having someone remind us of those things ahead of time would be a big help. 

With a reminder service business, you will be doing just that.  People will count on you to remember the things that they can’t afford to forget.  Your clientele will include everyone from businessmen to teachers. 

How to start.  First you need a name for your service.  It can be short and catchy to attract attention.  Register the name with the local business bureau so that you can put it on business cards, letterhead, and invoices.  A website with the same name is recommended so that you can draw business in not only locally, but also on a global level.  This is one business that is not bound by geographical location. 

Starting costs.  A reminder service doesn’t take much up front capital to get started.  If you already own a computer, your costs will be less than $1,000.  If not, you can add another $1,000 to that amount.  Software to help you manage your client’s appointments is also needed, as well as other office equipment.  A printer, fax machine, separate telephone line, and a cell phone will aid in the running of the business. 

Skills needed.  A person that wants the responsibility of reminding others of important dates and appointments needs to be well organized themselves.  Attention to detail is important in a business like this one.  People are counting on you to keep them informed.  A pleasant telephone voice is necessary for those reminder calls that you make to your clients.  Flexibility is a must.  Clients will expect you to be available at all hours.  If you have clients in other countries this will be especially true. 

Marketing.  Let people know that you are available and ready to provide for their needs.  The bulk of the start up money will be spent on advertising.  Flyers, ads in local newspapers, and mass mailings will get the ball rolling.  Small businesses would benefit from your services. 

Just getting started, it would be more cost effective to use a reminder service than hiring a receptionist or secretary.  Starting a website will attract global customers.  Purchase ad space on other small business websites and/or join affiliate programs. 

A reminder service is a business that can be started with very little money.  The more aggressive you are with finding clients, the sooner your business will earn some money and you’ll begin to earn a reputation.
