A researching business is a great way for moms to make a living from home.  It provides busy parents with flexibility and the ability to perform most of the work involved at home.  But what exactly does a research business involve?

Before You Get Started

One thing you might want to do before getting started in research is finding good general sources.  While different projects will require different types of information, having the links to some good general starting points bookmarked will save you time.  As you start getting projects, you may want to make folders with links to information on specific subjects for future reference.

Your First Project

When a client assigns you a research project, he or she will give you some sort of outline of what type of information is needed.  Some projects will require quantifiable information such as statistics, while others might ask for more subjective information.  Reading over the client’s requests in full before you get started will give you the opportunity to ask questions if anything is unclear.

It is up to you to find reliable sources to use.  While there is quality information on the Internet, there is also a great deal of misinformation.  Comparing several different sources can give you a good idea of which ones you should and should not trust.  Finding the most official sources possible, such as government websites or online encyclopedias, can help you ensure that you are getting facts instead of fiction.

If you can’t find all of the required information online, you may need to make a trip to the library.  An experienced librarian can assist you in finding anything that you have trouble with there.  If the local library doesn’t have what you need, they may be able to arrange for a loan from another nearby library.

Once you have gathered the information, you put it into the format that the client requests.  For small jobs a simple email may suffice, but often you will need to create a document with a word processor.  The client may also specify that he or she wants the information presented in a certain way, such as a table or chart.  Again, asking questions if you run across something that isn’t crystal clear will ensure that the client is happy.

When the research is completed and complied as desired, you will send it back to the client.  Email attachments are usually acceptable, but in some cases the client may want you to print out a hard copy and send it by mail or deliver it.
