Become a Small Business Consultant  

What you will be doing.  Starting a business is not an easy thing.  There are regulations to follow, permits to obtain, and employees to hire among other things.  It can become frustrating very quickly for the small business owner that runs into roadblocks every step of the way. 

As a small business consultant, it is your job to inform small business owners about everything they need to know to get their business off the ground.  You are the first line of support for those with a dream of business ownership.

How to start.  Decide on a company name and develop a business plan.  As a small business consultant, you are familiar with business plans.  Investigate the option of a small business loan.  Until the first client has been obtained and a retainer fee paid, you will be using your own money to woo clients.  A small business loan will ease the burden as you embark on your venture. 

Starting costs.  As I said, until the first dollars come in, you will foot the bill for advertising, equipment, client meetings, and so forth.  Count on around $5,000.  You will outfit your home office with a computer, printer, fax machine, computer software, copier, and a business telephone. 

Starting costs also include the time necessary to research the small businesses in your area and beyond.  You are looking at regulations, government guidelines, viability of businesses in certain markets, and economic changes.  Clients that seem interested may need more than one meeting.  The second one will be on you. 

Skills needed.  Small business consultants need small business experience.  They need to know the ins and outs of managing a small business, dealing with customers, and local government guidelines. 

You will communicate suggestions to your client to get their business off the ground.  Treating all clients with respect will gain their confidence.  The process may be time consuming so patience is warranted. 

Marketing.  Send out mass mailings to all the small businesses in the area.  Attend business symposiums and rent a booth at trade shows.  Have color brochures and business cards ready.  Even an Internet service business needs the help of local advertising to get the ball rolling. 

If you have the money, create a video presentation to show to prospective clients.  The video can run on your website and advertising sites like YouTube.  Tailor the video to the types of small businesses that you will cater to with your consulting business.  

A small business consultant makes the difference in the life of the small business owner.  The help and suggestions given can improve the bottom line and make the difference between folding and staying in business.
