Start a Soap Making Business from Home
What you will be doing.
We all need to be clean. Many soaps on the market have a
deodorant smell and chemicals that can irritate the skin. In
the early days of settlements, people made their own soap.
Using
natural items, soap had fewer ingredients to go along with that
cleaning power. As a soap maker, you will be providing people with a
brand of soap that is more environmentally and bodily friendly.
How to start.
Think
about the need for natural soap. Are there other soap makers in the
area? With everyone going “green,” this will be the perfect time to
give the soap making business a try. This business is not without
its regulations. The manufacture of such goods is regulated by the
food and drug administration. The area where the soap is made will
probably need to undergo inspection on a regular basis. Having a
business permit signifies that you are doing business officially.
This is when you register the name that you will be doing business
under.
There is no need for a separate facility if you have adequate space
in your home. It could be a garage or outbuilding, but the area is
just for the business and manufacture of soap. Decide on the
ingredients. Anyone making their own soap already has recipes they’d
like to tryout or may have tried out for the family to use. Create a
few test bars in a variety of combinations to see how they fare.
Starting costs.
The
costs can get out of hand quickly. The area where soap making will
be conducted will have to be outfitted with the necessary equipment.
Purchasing from a wholesaler can cut some of those startup costs.
There is also the cost of packaging. You can experiment with a few
looks by asking suppliers for a few freebies to see what works.
A computer, telephone, copier, and design software aid in attracting
business and coming up with creative packaging ideas. Look to spend
around $2,000 to $5,000 at the outset.
Skills needed. A soap maker must know about
making soap. The process requires patience and know-how to produce a
marketable product. Without this skill, any others won’t matter.
Because this is a specialty item, a flare for marketing and
advertising will be a great asset in selling the product.
Marketing.
The field is wide open here. There are several ways to go
about it. Showcasing your soaps at trade shows, flea markets, and
household shows gives people from other places a chance to smell and
sample the soaps. Direct marketing will serve you well when trying
to attract businesses like bed and breakfast establishments,
restaurants, and other tourist places.
To reach a larger audience, begin a website. Soaps can be sold over
the Internet. As the business grows, branch out into other beauty
products that are all natural. Join manufacturing associations that
can help with advertising and other business tips.
