Spices Gift Basket
What is variety? It is the spice of life. For the person who loves
to give their food a kick, you can give them a gift basket chock
full of the things they love to use. Here are some ideas for items
to put into a spice gift basket.
People who cook argue that drying your own spices is better than
using the dried one from the store. Those same people would say that
fresh is better than dried. For the cook who loves to spice things
up, using dried spices works for them as long as the spices stay
fresh.
There are a variety of spices that can be purchased from the grocery
store. These are the main staple spices that we use a lot: pepper,
sea salt, seasoned salt, curry, cumin, thyme, basil, and oregano.
It’s okay to put a few bottles of these in the basket because you
can never have too many of them.
Some of the harder to get spices is what a spicy cooker will crave.
Ethnic spices that are used primarily in other countries create
authentic dishes at home. These spices are ordered by catalogue or
picked up at specialty stores. Take a look around and see how many
you can find. If the person likes Indian cooking, look for some
saffron and real Indian curry powder.
Depending on the type of cooking they like to do, you could have a
number of spice jars in the basket. But, don’t stop there. They’ll
need a place to put those spices. A spice rack would do the trick.
Some spice racks come with jars already filled with the most common
spices. Choose an empty rack if you plan on purchasing spices
separately as you find them.
How about some plants? Many cooks grow their own herbs and spices. A
miniature pepper plant or pepper seeds along with some fresh mint,
oregano, and cilantro. Include a book on drying plants and grinding
your own spices.
If they are a diehard cook they’ll appreciate the chance to learn to
handle their own spices. A mortar and pestle will be needed to crush
the dried leaves.
Spices add flavor to meals. Someone who is adept at cooking will
value a basket full of them.
