Start a Sunglasses Business

What you will be doing.  The sun is hard on your eyes.  Dangerous ultraviolet rays can ruin your vision.  Sunglasses protect our vision and make it easier to see while driving a car or walking on the beach.  With a sunglass business, consumers can buy from you directly. 

How to start.  Check out fashion magazines and see what’s hot this year.  Depending on your clients, selling sunglasses can be a year round business.  Most sunglasses bought by the average consumer are to protect the eyes and look good, not for name brand.  Some people own several pairs of sunglasses because they are easy to find and don’t cost a lot. 

Starting costs.  The costs of this business are minimal.  You should have a computer with Internet access, a printer, telephone, fax machine, and a storage space for the merchandise. 

With a distributor, you can sell your sunglasses and have the wholesaler drop ship directly to the customer.  The costs may range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the inventory and where you want to sell your sunglasses.  If you do not have a computer and the other equipment, the cost can go up to around $2,500.

Skills needed.  As a retailer, you will need to be a salesperson.  Interpersonal skills are needed when dealing with the public.  Customers may want you to help them pick out a pair of sunglasses for themselves or another person.  Knowing how sunglasses should fit and which shape of lenses fit which facial type helps.

Flea markets and trade shows are excellent ways to find new customers.  Have brochures available that tell about you and your business.  Flea market appearances can be used to test market new sunglasses to see how well they sell.   

Online marketing opens up the business to a larger audience.  A forum on your website can be used for customer feedback.  EBay offers another avenue to sell your sunglasses individually or in bulk. 

Sunglasses make a fashion statement while protecting the eyes.  It is an easy business to start and can expand into a bigger business with other products.
