Creating Sympathy Gift Baskets
No
one thinks of sadness as a reason to give a gift, but those who are
grieving would appreciate comfort from those who care about them. A
gift in time of loss is timely and well received. A gift basket of
sympathy is one way to mark the passing of a loved one.
Food is the one thing that there is no shortage of when someone
dies. Whether it is the church or other relatives, everyone wants to
make sure that the grieving family is well fed. There is nothing
wrong with that. It is a tradition that goes back a long time.
Since the food is taken care of already, choose other items to fill
your sympathy basket. Besides physical needs, the family will also
have emotional and spiritual needs. Cater to one or both with your
gift.
Sometimes, the person who dies was close to us as well. Create a
memory album with photographs that you may have of the person. Maybe
you grew up together. Share those memories with the family. Include
empty scrapbooks or albums for the family to put together their own
album of memories. Decorative scrapbook pages, stickers, and other
accoutrements will help them bring it all together.
Comfort can come from a number of sources. A basket of resources for
grief can benefit the entire family. CDs, tapes, and books that deal
with loss help when the time is right. If the family has a strong
faith, material from their favorite preacher or religious speaker is
a nice touch. Just in case they don’t have a listening device, a CD
player and/or cassette player in the basket eliminate the hassle of
buying one.
If you want to include a food item in your basket, consider coffee,
teas, and biscotti. This is different from the food that they are
getting from everyone else and can be enjoyed alone or with friends.
Preparation is easy—just a kettle of hot water.
It is often hard to know what to get for someone who has experienced
a loss. They will appreciate a gift basket that you designed
yourself because it adds a personal touch.
