Start a Toys Business

What you will be doing.  What makes kids happy?  Toys!  They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.  They can be soft, hard, educational, funny, or just plain silly.  As long as there are kids, there will be a need for toys.  It all started with Santa Claus and you can make money, too. 

How to start.  Before you think up a name, consider what types of toys you will sell.  You can be indiscriminate and sell all kinds of items for babies, kids, and teens.  The toys can be brand names or homemade crafts.   

Once you have an idea, create a business plan.  The plan can be used to secure a small business loan or just to let you know where to start with the business.  Now that you have a niche and a plan, work on the name.  Register your name and check to see if a business license is needed for your operation. 

Starting costs.  The costs depend on the toys to be sold.  Any local selling will require inventory of merchandise for shows, flea markets, and other venues.  For homemade toys, you can try to market your items at online auctions on eBay.  There is a fee for setting up the auctions, but that money will be recouped with sales. 

With advertising, equipment, and merchandise, you could be looking at $2,500-$4,000.  A computer with Internet access, telephone, printer, and fax machine will complete your home office.  Software like Excel can keep track of customers and their orders along with suppliers, and day to day tracking.

Skills needed.  Toy sellers love toys.  A toy brings joy to a child and toy sellers know that.  The appropriate toy for the right child is important.  Paying attention to detail and listening to the customers are ways that toy sellers can choose the best toy for the child’s age and preferences.   

Marketing.  Ads in children’s magazines, mom’s magazines, parenting magazines, and the local directory can add to your visibility in the local and global area.  These ads will not be cheap, but choosing a few well known magazines can still net customers. 

A website gives you a chance to display photos of the products.  They can even be divided into categories for age and education level.  This makes it easier for parents to navigate the site without having to look at every single toy you sell.
