Start a Used Records & CDs Business
What you will be doing.
Do you have a closet full of old record or CDs? They can be
turned into a profitable business. Vinyl records are a
collector’s item these days and so are great music CDs.
Shine them up and offer them for sale.
How to start.
First, make sure that your merchandise is of the best
quality. Play each record and CD to make sure that there
are no scratches or skips. Sleeves or cases for each record
and disc complete with song name, album, and artist should
be printed or typed clearly on a label.
Choose a business name. Register your name with the
appropriate local agency and apply for a business license.
The business name, your name, website address, and telephone
number can be embossed on pre-printed labels to add to the
back of each record and disc case.
You can choose to sell locally and/or via a website on the
Internet. If you sell locally, you can use flea markets and
trade shows as venues of choice. On the Internet, you can
set up your own website with a virtual store for selling
merchandise.
Starting costs.
Using the Internet, the starting costs may not even top
$800. This depends on how many CDs and records you already
own or can find through other means. A computer will be
needed for Internet access and a printer and telephone for
customer service issues and printing invoices and financial
statements.
Advertising and website setup costs are billed by the month
by most providers so the amount is spread out over an entire
year instead of all at once. Affiliate programs with other
music websites and blogs can further reduce that cost. A
digital camera can be used to take photos of each item to be
uploaded to the website for view by potential clients.
Skills needed.
Music lovers do well with this type of business. Knowing a
little something about music helps you to accurately gauge
the selling price for each item. The more popular the
singer, the better the music will sell even if it is a used
CD or record in mint condition.
Marketing.
Advertising in music magazines and music stores through
flyers and print ads gets the right people looking in your
direction. Print ads are still beneficial if you run a
mostly Internet business. A color portfolio of your
merchandise that is updated when new items are added to the
collection or others are sold is a good selling point at
trade shows.
Records are collector’s items now. There is nothing like
the crisp sound of the needle on vinyl. Turn those 45s into
cash money.
