Start a Video Games Business

What you will be doing.  Video games continue to evolve.  I remember the old Atari console with the ping pong game that only showed the paddles and the ball.  The game cartridges were large and boxy.  Now, video game cartridges are small enough to hide in your pocket.  The game consoles continue to get smaller and more interactive as well. 

How to start.  With a video game business, you can sell new and used video games to gamers all over the world.  You can start with your own collection.  Any used but good condition video games that you own can be auctioned off or sold outright on your own website.   

Write up a business plan.  The purpose is to get down on paper the particulars of the business and where you want it to go.  This will guide you in the months and years to come. 

Decide on a name for the business.  If you plan to purchase new video games and resell them, check with a small business consultant about fees or licenses associated with becoming an authorized reseller of name brand merchandise that has not been used.  You don’t want to run afoul of the manufacturers of these items. 

Starting costs.  New video games are about $50 per game or more.  The games that you own should be checked for any defects before selling.  Choosing the most popular games can get expensive.  Plan to spend $900-$2,000.  This includes your computer or laptop and Internet setup, printer, and telephone. 

If you already have a computer, the extra money can be used for advertising or more merchandise.  Website setup is also included.  If you don’t own a digital camera, getting one allows you to take pictures of the video game covers for online viewing. 

Skills needed.  Video gamers know the ins and outs of video games and the systems.  Use this knowledge to your advantage.  Each video game should have a detailed description of the game content, what type of game it is (RPG, etc.), and what system requirements are needed.   

Marketing.  Use print ads in gaming magazines and local directories.  To avoid the cost of booth rental and setup, this business can be run online exclusively.  Advertise on gaming sites.  Sell advertising space to gamers on your website.  Host a forum for gamers and customers to discuss game strategy, what’s new, and what to avoid. 

Another advertising avenue is eBay.  EBay is a great place to auction off merchandise and draw traffic to your website.  With video games, purchasing games in limited release and selling them on eBay quickly, can net huge profits. 

Video games are more popular than ever.  As the graphics get more life-like, the business grows.
