What's the Top Affiliate Marketing Opportunity?
What's the Top Affiliate Marketing Opportunity? I Don't Know, but
Here's a Tip...
Let me start by saying not all affiliate programs are equal. How
many times have you heard a someone complain, "I've been promoting
this affiliate program for months and haven't made a sale"? Maybe,
you've even made this complaint.
When I hear someone ask this, I have to ask ,"How much traffic did
she send the affiliate program in that time? 20 clicks? 30 clicks?"
FAIR WARNING: I'm going to give you a bit of math here. But trust
me, it's simple math. I hate math, but even I can understand this!
Let's remember these important things: |
For those who don't know what an affiliate program is -
here's a simple definition that I REALLY like:
You make recommendations for products on other websites.
When someone buys as a result of your recommendation, you
make a commission. The other website creates the products
and fulfills the order. You just collect the money. Sounds
good, doesn't it? |
|
|
-> As a generalization, you can hope to make 1 sale for every 100
clicks you send a website. Sometimes, you'll make more sales and
sometimes a bit less. And sometimes you'll send hundreds of visitors
and make NOTHING...in that case, it's probably time to drop the
program. The website clearly doesn't convert it's visitors to sales.
-> Now, just because one product gives you 2 sales per 100 clicks
and another gives you 1 sale per 150 clicks...doesn't necessarily
mean the 1st program is the better one. Let's talk dollar figures:
Let's say that the 2 sales in 100 clicks program pays you $5 per
sale, but the 1 sale in 150 clicks pays you $20...then the 2nd
program is clearly the winner. So, don't just look at clicks, look
at your bottom line. How much does your traffic earn you? Always
calculate your EPC, which stands for
"Earnings per click".
This is the calculation - PROFIT / CLICKS = EPC
In the first case, your EPC is $0.10
In the second case, your EPC is $0.13
So, here's your take away lessons from this:
1. Realize that you'll have to send a decent amount of traffic
before you can see if an affiliate program is effective.
2. Always, keep an eye on conversion rates (how many clicks it takes
to make a sale) of the products you promote. If they just aren't
converting, it may be time to move on. Even with a great product, if
the marketing stinks, there may not be much you can do.
3. But more important than conversion rates, calculate your EPC
(Earnings Per Click). Sometimes it's worth waiting a few extra
clicks for bigger commissions.
