How to Copyright an Idea - Sorry, It Can't Be Done
Why Trying to Protect Your Business Ideas from Duplication Can Be
Hazardous to Your Health and Your Profit Margin
Since starting in online business, I have always been amazed at the
outcries of people who say their websites are being copied. I head
right over to see because I hate copyright infringement. Most of the
time, when I arrive I see a website that has a similar
concept…sometimes better than the original and sometimes worse.
Then, I think, “What’s the problem?”
Now, don’t get me wrong, if a website has copied the text of another
website…that is a copyright issue. Absolutely! But, if you’re
wondering how to copyright an idea, I’m very sorry ---
You CAN’T copyright an idea.
Let’s Imagine a World with Copyright Protection on Ideas
If we could copyright ideas, we’d be living in a world where people
only drank Coca-Cola; we’d all be operating computers using DOS; and
we’d all be driving Fords. It doesn’t make for an interesting world,
does it?
Innovation comes when talented people develop existing ideas and
make them even better.
Of Course, There is Malice in this Online World
Yeah, I know some people develop similar ideas because they want to
sabotage your efforts or to simply make you sweat. These people are
not worth one iota of your time and you can just let them crash and
burn on their own. An online business built on revenge rarely goes
far.
So, let’s forget about these people. We don’t care about them and
stressing out about it could harm your health (seriously!) and your
business.
Competition is a GOOD thing! Turn it into a Positive
Let’s be serious…if you have no competition, you are probably in the
wrong industry and there is not likely a demand for your product or
service. We all need a little competition.
If I had a dime for every time somebody asked me for advice on
starting a work at home mom resources website just like
InternetBasedMoms.com…I’d be a very, very wealthy woman.
You know what I do when people ask me for advice? I give them candid
and honest advice for developing their website. I encourage them to
find their own niche within the work at home mom market and be the
best that they can be in that niche. Don’t do what everyone else is
doing, I tell them…make it better!
Why do I do this? Because I want to create an environment of
openness and if that person can create a useful website…it might
just be possible to work as business partners on projects or
co-promotion, instead of battling like children.
So, next time you start to fret when you see a similar website set
up shop next door, take a look inside and see what it’s all about.
You may see so many ways you can work together. You could write an
ebook together; co-write a newsletter; start a public forum
together; or promote one another’s products.
Just keep an open mind. The possibilities are endless!
