Balance - Can Work at Home Moms Really Have it All?

You’re a chef, chauffer, counselor, nurse, confidant, business woman and the list goes on - what doesn’t a work at home mom do?

Don’t get us wrong all moms have an important task at hand, but many are quick to think work at home moms have it easy, when in fact it can be quite tricky to find a happy balance between family and work.

The good news is there is light at the end of all those late night feedings and after-school clubs. With a little practice, determination and support you can have it all… well with perhaps a slight compromise here and there.

The “ALL” you can achieve will probably be different to the career women who doesn’t have children or the single marketer who spends his days launching new products.  But what the heck, who cares, you get the biggest reward of all and that’s watching a little part of you grow and thrive right before your eyes… so you really do have it all don’t you?

Here are a few tips to help you achieve work at home balance:

Don’t compare yourself – Sometimes it may seem as though other business owners are zooming past you, but you can’t compare yourself to other people. The person you’re comparing yourself to may have teenagers at home while you have toddlers, or perhaps they have full-time childcare and you homeschool your children.

Everyone’s situation is different and if you have young children at home without much childcare help it’s hard to accomplish the same things as a full-time marketer or business owner who works 10 hours a day.

The bottom line is comparison only leads to disappointment. It’s never a good thing even when used as motivation. Find motivation within you and don’t worry about what others are doing.

Get help – If you owned a brick and mortar business surely you wouldn’t do everything yourself. Treat your home business as a real business and not just a hobby. Allocate a budget to get help with tasks related to the business or get help with the house. Don’t try to do it all yourself.

Step away from the computer – This is easier said than done. One sure way to resolve this issue is to turn off your computer. A lot of times we waste time checking our email over and over or just surfing around.

Turn off your computer and when you sit down to work have a set plan before you sit down.

Don’t beat yourself up – We’re not perfect, you’re not perfect, no one is perfect. So maybe you’ve worked too hard the last few weeks and guilt is setting in because you haven’t spent quality time with the kids… don’t beat yourself up.

Use this as an opportunity to spend some quality time with the kids and really bond with them. Now you have to be realistic too and the kids also need to understand that mommy does need to work. Sometimes it’s okay to tell the kids, “this is my time to work and it’s important. I need you to respect this time” (within age appropriate reason of course).

By the same token make sure you let your kids know how important they are and that they also get uninterrupted quality time with you. Don’t let them feel business comes first.

Find Support – Whether it’s through local friends, a moms group or even at the kid’s school, try to get out there and meet people. It’s important to have friends and mentors you can turn to for help or just to laugh with.

You can also find support online. As busy moms this is a good option and a good way to find and connect with other moms.

To chat with other moms about kids, life, health and business join us at:

And although forums are great, still try to get out there and spend time and connect with other people. It’s great being able to meet with a friend, even If it’s just for a quick coffee and chat. As a work at home mom it’s also good to get away from the computer once in a while.
