Hi there,
We hope you’ve had a good holiday and wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
We’re sure you already have some great goals for 2007 and if you’re like many
online business owners one of the goals on your list may be to get more traffic
to your website.
Whether you’ve been in business for years are just starting out, targeted
quality traffic is important for your online business. Now there are plenty of
ways to drive traffic to your site but you also need to have a clear purpose of
what you’re going to do with all those visitors once they get to your website.
Lets start with getting that traffic and over the next few weeks we’ll talk a
little more about what to do with it!
This week, Mila has put together a simple f r e e search engine traffic plan for
you:
1. Do Your Research - Look for keyword phrases that people would use to search
for your articles or products on a search engine. You can use tools like
wordtracker.com or inventory.overture.com to find keywords. It’s always best to
go with "underachiever" keywords rather than very competitive keywords.
So in other words, rather than compete on a term that’s very competitive such as
"work at home" you can try to rank well for a less competitive phrase such as
"ways to earn money from home". Sure, this keyword phrase has a fewer searches
but you stand a much higher chance for ranking well with this phrase than the
competitive work from home.
If you follow this method for all your pages that traffic can really build up.
In other words, each page should have it's own main keyword phrased you are
targeting. By doing this, your traffic will also be more targeted since your
search phrases are more specific. And remember there is really no limit to the
number of pages you can have on your website.
Once you've done your research...
2. Set up your Page - You’ll want your pages and writing to flow as naturally as
possible. You still need to make sure you add your keywords to the pages but do
it in a way which doesn’t disrupt your writing, you don’t want to over-optimize
your pages.
----- Note from Alice -----
Personally, I don't find that the pattern of the keyword phrase on the page
really affects how you rank well for very targeted phrases. I also like to
discourage people from following a set "pattern". Like Mila says, you don't want
to over-optimize your pages, so keep it as natural as possible.
What is most important is that the keyword appears in the title tag of your page
(but you can have other extra text after the phrase - again, you don't want to
over-optimize) and that you link into the particular page using your keyword
phrase. You can also include the keyword phrase in your description tag, but
it's bearing on your ranking is questionable. It is a good idea to include as
the description tag is what major search engines use to describe your page in
their listings.
---------------------------
New Website Checklist - If you’re website is relatively new or you’re not
getting much traffic here’s a checklist you can follow to help you get started.
*If you’ve just built your website try to add at least 20 quality optimized
pages to start.
*Add a site map and clear navigation structure to your site so that search
engine spiders can easily crawl from one page to the next.
*Write and distribute at least five articles to online article directories.
*Write and distribute a press release to the online press release wires.
*Try to build at least 3 to 5 incoming links to start from related quality
sites. Eventually you'll want to build more links, but build your links
naturally.
*Participate in related forums and message board discussions that allow you to
link to your site in your signature.
*Set up a blog and keep your visitors up to date with all the latest.
* Regularly add new content to your website.
* Track your website visitors.
Website optimization is never an exact science but by offering quality content
and following this checklist you can help drive targeted visitors to your
website before you know it.
Note: Most search engines do not require you to submit your website. By
distributing a few articles and getting some back links they will find your
site.
If you want to check whether or not your site has been indexed just go to any
search engine and type site:mydomain.com and you’ll see whether your pages have
been listed or not.
MSN Tip: If you’re website has not been indexed by MSN simply click on "If you
cannot find a page that you know exists, send the address to us link and enter
your website address". Usually your site will show up within a few days.
Those tips and checklist will help get you started and next week we’ll be
talking about Traffic Magnets and ways you can really boost your traffic
results.
Search engines are a big subject that can't be covered in one newsletter issue,
but with experience and learning more on the subject as you go along, you can
learn to have steady stream of traffic that doesn't require you to open your
wallet!
Talk to you soon,

Week in Review
Effective January 1, 2007, Simon Hemus has been named President and Chief
Operating Officer of Tupperware Brands Corporation. Hemus joined Tupperware last
year when the company acquired Sara Lee's direct selling division, which Hemus
led as Group President and Chief Executive.
Christa Hart, will move from her current spot as
executive vice president for strategy and business development to become
executive vice president for beauty.
Tupperware appears to be shifting its focus away
from selling storage products and more towards selling beauty products.
