Hi there,
“Can You Really Work from Home?” This has been our topic for the last 3 weeks.
We’ve been giving you ideas on different businesses you can easily start from
home. The internet is filled with opportunities and if you’re willing to put a
little dedication and hard work into a business, then you definitely CAN make
money.
The opportunities are there for the taking, and we’re hoping our business ideas
will give you a good feel for those opportunities and how to make money with
them.
Moving on this week, we want to talk about another great and actually quite cool
business – Writing. If you enjoy writing then you can easily start getting paid
to write. And if you think writing online is only for people who have a “gift”
or are born writers then let us put that myth to rest right now – writing for
the internet is very different to writing a term paper or a best-selling novel.
Writing for the internet, which is a very high-demand field, involves the skill
of writing in a friendly conversational tone. If you can talk and tell stories
than you can certainly write. However, you will need to be able to do a little
research, have good grammar and spelling skills. Adapting to different writing
styles is also important.
A good way to get started writing for pay is to build a simple website where
prospective clients can go to learn more about your services, rates, view
writing samples and learn a little more about you.
Once you have your website set up, the next step is to visit a few online forums
and promote your writing services in your signature line. Please make sure you
read the rules of the forum you’re joining before doing this. It’s also a good
idea to participate and get to know people rather than just advertising your
services (this won’t be received well).
By joining an online community you’ll start to meet people and once you get your
first job, providing you do it well, you should be able to grow your writing
business through recommendations.
You can also write articles and distribute them to the online article
directories with a link back to your site. In the articles you can give writing
tips, tips for providing a good service, what ghost writing is, etc. Make sure
your expertise stands so that when someone reads the article they say “this
person knows what it takes to be a good writer”. Establish yourself as an expert
and people will start to see you that way, of course, you have to deliver the
goods to keep your expert status.
There really is a big demand for writers, visit any online forum and you’ll see
a thread or two of business owners looking for writers. You can also find
writing assignments at places like Elance.com and Guru.com. There are lots of
opportunities for quality writers online.
If you’re serious about getting started and building a profitable writing
business, we’ve put together a Moms Talk Biz Guide to Writing for Pay. The guide
covers everything you need to know to get started making money as a writer;
you’ll learn what the different types of writing are, how to find and keep
clients, how to land the best jobs and how to hire writers to help you as your

Week in Review
Have you checked your website in alternative browsers, particularly Firefox?
While Internet Explorer users are still in the majority (nearly 59% of Internet
users), there are a significant number of Internet users browsing with Firefox....
31% of us. And sometimes websites that look just fine in IE have issues when
viewed with other browsers.
Think about it... if your site doesn't render properly in Firefox you could be
putting off 31 out of every 100 visitors.
