If you've been marketing online for a while you may already be involved with affiliate marketing or it may be something you've always been curious about. If you don't know what affiliate marketing is, it's a great way to make money online selling other people’s stuff.

Affiliate marketing gives you great flexibility – you don’t have to stock inventory or worry about order fulfillment. You also don’t have to deal with customer service issues or invest any upfront money into the product creation process. You simply market products others have created in exchange for part of the profits. Sounds easy enough right? And it can be.

Affiliate marketing can also be extremely profitable. The key is to provide your visitors with quality content related to the products you’re selling instead of just adding a bunch of product descriptions and banners to your site. Give your visitors quality content and then naturally make product recommendations where appropriate and you’ll be one step ahead.

Although many people make a nice living just from affiliate marketing alone, this doesn’t have to be your only business. You can use it as a way to supplement your existing business. It doesn’t really matter what type of business you have, the chances are you can find a suitable product to promote.

For example if you offer virtual assistant services you can promote website building software or accounting software. You can also have a section on your website for people who want to start their own VA business and promote a related ebook or product on that page.

The possibilities with affiliate marketing are endless. It really is a great way to get started making money online or supplement an existing business. The US Commerce Department reports that online retail sales increased again during the first quarter of 2007. Online sales reached more than $31 billion during the first 3 months of this year to account for about 3% of total retails sales in the US.
