Who Has the Best Pay per Click?

April 2004

Well, it's difficult to make a blanket statement as to who has the best pay per click (ppc). Their are pluses and minuses to each one.

But I Will Make This One General Statement about Pay per Clicks

You have to be smart or you can potentially lose a lot of money. You will hear people say, "Pay per clicks don't work."

This is just totally untrue. A pay per click did not work for them because they didn't use them to their advantage. There is a learning curve and you need bid smartly and choose your keywords wisely.

A Big Pay per Click Site Usually Means More Traffic & More Buyers

If you use a large PPC search engine, your chances of getting steady targeted traffic are much higher than if you used a small site. I guess that's pretty obvious, but some people like to start with small pay per click search engines because they can start with lower bids...thus...

But More Traffic Means Higher Bids

Of course, bidding at Google AdWords & Overture means you can reach far more people than you can at smaller pay per clicks...but the bidding often starts higher and the overall bids can get quite outrageously high.

Minimum bid at AdWords: 5 cents
Minimum bid at Overture: 10 cents

Maximum bid - Unknown, but I have seen plenty that are $20 per click and higher.

But if you dig deep, you can often find plenty of good keywords to target that won't cause you to re-mortgage your house. I promise. There is no need to pay more than 10 cents on Google or 15 cents on Overture to get highly targeted traffic.

If you go to smaller pay per click search engines, you'll find it harder to get a steady stream of traffic and keep your bidding down at the same time. You'll have fewer keyword phrases to choose from and those keywords will have fewer searches. Therefore, the ones that will bring any traffic, will have some pretty fierce bidding. So, it's really a toss up.

So, Who Has the Best Pay per Click?

If you're just getting started, I highly recommend you start with either Google AdWords or Overture. You will be able to start getting good traffic right away and it gives you the opportunity to hone your pay per click skills.

Between Google and Overture, everyone has their preference. I prefer Google because:

- bidding starts at 5 cents
- I can bid on keyphrases that have fewer than 100 searches per month
- I don't have to wait for approval to get my campaigns going

But if you'd like a factual and non partisan comparison of the two pay per click giants, read my article Pay Per Click Comparison: Google AdWords vs. Overture.
